INTRODUCTION:
A solar rooftop is an array of solar cells installed on roofs and has the capability of capturing the light emitted from the sun and converting it into electricity. The ever increasing tariffs on electricity can be resolved by using natural/ renewable sources available. Solar Rooftops can be acknowledged as one of the most used forms of solar energy systems.
FEW THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SOLAR ROOFTOP SYSTEMS:
No harmful gases are released
In the process of energy production, solar panels do not emit any kind of harmful greenhouse gases.
GST Benefit
The solar rooftop systems fall under 5% tax brackets. It is among one of the few goods in India that comes under this bracket. Apart from that, the basic custom duty on solar cells being used in manufacturing in India is 0%.

Production capacity
1KWp of panel is estimated to produce about 1400 – 1600 units per year. The power generation then depends on the location and will vary with any change in atmospheric conditions.
Raw materials used to make solar panel roofs
- Silicon, solar cells and a few other materials are used to make solar panels
- Silicon is found in sand, mainly in natural beach sand, which is abundantly available
- Solar panel is a matrix-like structure made from joining several solar cells together
The only factor that hinders the ability of a solar panel to produce power in case of a power cut is the type of inverter used/installed.
FOUR MAIN TYPES OF SOLAR INVERTERS:
1. Grid-tied inverters:
The grid-tied inverters are completely dependent on the grid. They solely depend on the grid to provide reference voltage and this is the reason why this kind of inverter doesn’t allow solar panels to continue to produce power during a power cut. They are primarily designed to supply the power generated by the panels to the grid and to supply the load while grid power is available.
2. Off-grid inverters:
The off-grid inverters are completely independent of the grid. They’re designed primarily to operate with battery backups and diesel generators. The reference voltage from the battery backups is supplied to the panels. While this is a great option for areas with little or no coverage of the power grid, it is not advisable if the solar panels are intended to work in parallel with your pre-existing electricity connection.
3. Grid-interactive inverters:
The grid-interactive inverters are independent of both the grid as well as battery-backup systems, either one can be used as and when the need arises. These inverters also need a connection to a diesel generator or battery backup as well as a connection to the grid, so that they can switch between the two in case of power failure or cut.
4. Hybrid inverters:
Hybrid inverters are also called as bidirectional inverters. For all solar panel related problems they are a one-system solution. The inverter addresses any potential problems, such as reference voltage, power failure, etc., and also has systems in place to curb panel insulation. These inverters are best utilized in plants where power management from more than one source is needed.
So clearly, the choice of solar inverter largely determines the use and effectiveness of your rooftop solar panels. It is advisable, at this stage, to assess your needs, based on previous electricity bills and power-cut history, and your expectations of PV panels before making a decision. It is also important to understand the needs and limitations of solar panels as well as the options available.
