What is a Solar Rooftop?
Solar Panels placed on rooftops are ideal for harnessing the sun’s energy, which otherwise would’ve been wasted, into electricity. Rooftops converted in this manner to hold PV modules are called Solar Rooftops.
Solar Rooftop in India
The shift towards clean, reliable and affordable electricity in India is visible in the rapid proliferation of solar panels mounted on the roofs of homes, buildings, schools, government buildings and even businesses, i.e., solar panels for commercial use, solar panels for office buildings, and solar panels for home.
India is one of the countries that has accomplished the largest production of renewable energy. As of 2019, 35% of installed power generation capacity of India comes from renewable sources of energy, which is equal to generating 17% of the country’s total electricity.
The adoption rate of solar rooftop in India is accelerating today. From a historically low base, rooftop solar has been the fastest growing renewable energy sub-sector in India, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 116% between 2012 and 2018.
To assist the Government of India in achieving its ambitious target of achieving 227GW (earlier it was 175GW), the World Bank is providing US$625m in financial support for grid-connected rooftop solar projects.
BENEFITS OF SOLAR ROOFTOPS
- Cost savings
One of the greatest benefits of installing solar panels on the roof is that they provide cost savings. The tariff quotes for rooftop solar relative to industrial and commercial tariff rates are 17% and 27% lower, respectively. With the trend in solar being that panels keep getting cheaper, industries opting for solar are bound to see gains in the next few years. - Reduces carbon footprint
From the very initial process of installing the panels to the electricity generated by PV cells, no health hazards are involved and don’t generate any heat-trapping gases that contribute to global climate change. It not only doesn’t generate carbon dioxide but also none of the other harmful emissions or wastes associated with coal – nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxides, and mercury – are produced. - Low maintenance costs
Rooftop Solar System is a cost-effective system. It simply requires proper cleaning and good maintenance from time to time, which is not even a complicated process. Most solar rooftops have a life expectancy of 25 years which makes them worth the investment. Basically, no major costs are involved. We have a system, an asset management technology that monitors your solar panels’ health and maintenance, so if there is any issue you will be notified immediately. - Reduction in electricity bills
Installing solar panels for home or office use can reduce your electricity bill. A normal electricity connection relies on coal, oil, and natural gas to power homes across the country. By installing panels on your home’s rooftop saves you economically as well as the environment.Of course, each household is unique and has a different solar panel requirement. There is a misconception that homes must be located in the south to use rooftop panels, however time and again with successful installation, Mahindra Solarize has proved that #SolarIsPossibleEverywhere. - Suitable for Indian climate
Our country is situated in such a geographical location that is ideal for receiving ample tropical sunlight. With almost 300 sunny days with clear skies, each year India has one of the best conditions in the world to harness solar energy. - No additional space required for installation
Since the system is installed on the roofs of commercial or residential buildings (as is clear from the name!), they do not require large tracts of land; this concept is both viable and sustainable. This also has an add-on advantage – the resale value of a house will increase when it comes with an installed solar rooftop system! - Support from the government
The solar rooftop systems fall under the 5% tax bracket. It is the most attractive tax rate (if one doesn’t consider the 0% tax bracket) that the government offers. This is one of the few goods in India that fall under this low tax category.
YOU CAN BECOME SOLAR TOO!
Rooftop solar systems are becoming a popular source of power i.e electricity generation. Even you can go solar and save money and the planet with solar rooftop solutions with residential solar and panels for commercial use.
With proper planning and appropriate implementation of the system, you can have a renewable source of power supply at minimal expense.
